Centre for Climate Research and Development (CCRD), COMSATS University Islamabad organized an insightful talk titled, “Status of Municipal Solid Waste Management in Rawalpindi City – A Way Forward”. It was delivered by Dr. Hamid Iqbal, Senior Manager, Operations, Research and Development Department at Rawalpindi Waste Management Company (RWMC). Participants from different universities, including International Islamic University Islamabad (IIUI), Quaid-e-Azam University (QAU) and Bahria University Islamabad (BUI) attended the talk, highlighting current challenges facing Municipal Solid Waste Management in Rawalpindi city.

The speaker gave a detailed introduction about RWMC which was established on 15th July 2015 to primarily serve Rawalpindi and Murree cities, and to gradually expand to other tehsils of district Rawalpindi. He further informed that RWMC is covering 73 Union Councils, private hospitals and Metro Bus Service (Rawalpindi – Islamabad). While highlighting the achievements of RWMC, Dr. Iqbal provided waste collection figures from November 2014 to January 2016. He added that a total of 287 open dumping plots were cleared, with 187,465 tons of waste shifted to Losar dumpsite. He noted that RWMC has had a positive impact on sanitation having upgraded waste management services to Rawalpindi through their operations, state of the art monitoring systems, public awareness campaigns, establishment of R & D section, training of fresh graduates and periodic capacity building.

At the end, vote of thanks was given by Dr. Toqeer Ahmad, Assistant Professor, CCRD, CUI; a souvenir was presented to guest speaker. Refreshments were served to participants

Centre for Climate Research & Development organized talk on ‘National Water Policy 2018: Gaps & Way Forward’ delivered by Dr. Rashid Aftab, Director Riphah Institute of Public Policy at Riphah International University Islamabad on 5th July 2018 at COMSATS University Islamabad. The talk was attended by research scientists, policy makers, young researchers and students from different institutes of Islamabad. Delegation including First Secretary from Embassy of Japan were among guests of the event. In his talk, Dr. Rashid presented key features of National Water Policy that was announced in April this year. He highlighted major policy gaps that need to be addressed for effective implementation of national policy. Lack of integrated planning, overlooking sustainable land management for agriculture land and low stakeholder participation are among the policy gaps identified by the speaker. Dr. Rashid stressed on the need of efficient utilization of available water resources, increasing public-private partnership and better water governance are some of the steps needed to cope with the water security issue for Pakistan. The talk was followed by Q&A session by the audience. The speaker was presented with souvenir as a token of appreciation. In the end, Prof. Dr. Athar Hussain, Head CCRD thanked all the participants and the speaker of the event. Refreshments were served at the end of the event.

The Inter Islamic Network on Information Technology (INIT), in collaboration with the Islamic Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO) and the Commission on Science and Technology for Sustainable Development in the South (COMSATS) is organizing 4th International Conference on ‘Agriculture, Food Security and Biotechnology’, on November 13 - 14, 2018 at Rabat, Kingdom of Morocco. The Conference aims to provide an interactive platform to academicians, scientists and researchers to deliberate upon the burning issue of food insecurity while underpinning the significance of Agriculture, Food Security and Biotechnology.

The conference will, interalia, highlight the importance and role of information technology and its associated systems in enhancing agriculture productivity, elimination of hunger, improving nutrition and achieving food security. The scientists, researchers, technologists and faculty members from different parts of the world will share their knowledge and experiences on interventions of IT in the field of agriculture, food security and biotechnology.

A one-day seminar on ‘CPEC The Way Forward – Introduction on Pakistan Agricultural Exports’ was organized on August 15, 2018 in Islamabad campus. The purpose of the seminar was to find ways to uplift, source, process and export agricultural produce from Pakistan to China and other countries. The seminar was focused on CPEC, which is a matter of interest for both the countries, and evolution of China from a similar economic condition where Pakistan stands today.

Mr. Wu Yongqiang, Deputy Secretary General, All-China Youth Federation Press and Publication Sector, was the Principal Speaker of the event. Along with him, the visiting Chinese delegation included Mr. Sun Xiangyang, Chairman, Yangming Technology Investment Company; Mr. Yao Zongchang, Chairman, Taidi Network Technology Co Ltd. and Ms. Wu Xueqin, legal assistant and translator.

The seminar was attended by leading members of think tanks, policy makers, representatives of the agricultural industry, agricultural research councils, chamber of commerce, academia and the faculty and students.

The seminar opened with the recitation from the holy Quran. Dr. Khalid Riaz, Dean, Business Administration, delivered his welcome address. He focused on need of trade on both sides especially export of agricultural commodities from Pakistan to China. He spoke about the opportunities as well as threats associated with the advent of CPEC. He emphasized on exporting agricultural commodities of Pakistan to China and other countries.

Mr. Amar Zafar Khan, CEO, Pehle Aap (Pvt) Ltd. gave his address and shared his idea of upliftment of Pakistan’s agricultural fisheries and livestock output through using major specialist chinese companies, which are equipped with an end to end supply chain & marketing infrastructure, to source and export to china and other countries. He emphasized the need of agriculture which has been used as a starting point as highest potential of growth, considering it employs 60% of our population and is key to bringing prosperity to rural Pakistan. 

Mr. Wu Yongqiang, the principal speaker of the seminar, delivered his speech. He highlighted CPEC as a transformative project which holds enormous potential for transforming lives of the people of both countries, Pakistan and China. He further added that it is a long-term initiative to promote economic cooperation through collaboration in various areas. By channeling this assistance into food exports and over time exports of other products, both countries look forward to providing new opportunities to the citizens of the two countries and bring new impetus and vision to the China-Pakistan friendship.

Mr Wu drew parallels between Pakistan today and China’s impoverishment in the 80s. He described how China worked its way out of poverty using several strategies, mainly exports to becoming the world leader in exports by a significant margin.

The seminar was closed on the networking session with serving of high tea. The Chinese delegation was served with lunch in faculty cafeteria of CUI. The delegation departed from CUI on a happy note.
