In order to raise awareness of the role of science for ‘peaceful’ and ‘sustainable societies’ UNESCO celebrates the World Science Day for Peace and Development once yearly on November 10. And why not, all aspects of our daily lives have huge effects of science. Virtual knowledge, comfort and recuperation are due to scientific endeavors. It is also because of the science that vaccines have been developed which suppressed the pandemic.

International students of COMSATS University contributed to the festivity of the “World Science Day for Peace and Development” with the theme “Creating Climate Resilient Communities”, held at COMSTECH on November 10, 2021.

The importance of science and science communication to the masses for active engagement with new technologies and innovations available was highlighted. In compatible with the theme, it was expressed by the speakers that in case of implementing and following the guidelines in regard to the climate change, are not good, its lagging behind and in the current alarming situation they are nowhere near succeeding in following the footsteps of our past nation in trying to lessen the effects of climate change. The uses of different technologies that can be used to address these effects were talked about and it was suggested to use new technologies.

On this occasion, the Coordinator General COMSTECH said that Science and Technology has played a key role in global transformation and helped humanity to act beyond the limitations. He stressed that on the need of flourishing and strengthening the linkages between “science and technology” with the society for development.

The International Office CUI, organized a Student Awareness Session on “International Scholarships and Innovative Research Universities (IRU) Australia on Tuesday 2 November, 2021. The session was focused on sharing information regarding a range of scholarships at Australian universities.

Ms. Sabeeh Qayyum was the resource person for the session. Ms. Sabeeh Qayyum is currently engaged as Country Director-Pakistan for Innovative Research Universities, Australia, completing 03 years with them this month. She is an Australian Alumnus, as well as Australia Awards holder, having studied a Master in Counseling from Monash University, Melbourne. Innovative Research Universities (IRU) is a coalition of eight comprehensive universities committed to inclusive excellence in teaching, learning and research in Australia. Its members include Charles Darwin University, Flinders University, Griffith University, James Cook University, La Trobe University, Murdoch University, University of Canberra and Western Sydney University.

Topics covered in the session included introduction to IRU followed by brief introduction of each university included in IRU along with available scholarship opportunities. The session was choke full of students of various semesters from all the departments of CUI.

In the end of the session, Head IO, Mr. Ali Tawab Baloch, thanked Ms. Sabeeh Qayyum for conducting this in-depth session for the students. Mr. Ali Tawab motivated the students to capitalize scholarship opportunities and encouraged them to visit the International Office website and other social media handles regularly, where such opportunities are uploaded on daily basis. He assured them of full facilitation and guidance from his office. In the end he appreciated the IEEE student society for helping to organize this successful event.

CCRD is conducting a study titled “Feasibility Study of Provision of Safe Drinking Water through Water Conservation (SDWC)”. One of the main objectives of the study is to educate people about the sustainable use of water both indoor and outside. Schools are hub of students from different families and a source of quick information dispersion. Therefore, On October 22, 2021 a session on “Awareness Raising Activity on water conservation” has been organised at International Islamic University Islamabad School I-8/3 Islamabad. In this activity more than forty students participated very actively and happily. Ms. Shagufta, Branch Head, IIUI School, along with four teachers at the school provided support. In the start of activity, a student recited few verses from Holy Quran in a melodious voice. After recitation, Dr. Toqeer Ahmad, Assistant Professor, CCRD, CUI, introduced his team and briefed the participants about the nature and objectives of the project. Moreover, he highlighted the importance and tips for water conservation. A detailed lecture was delivered by Ms. Saima Naz, Research Associate of the D-8 funded project, regarding importance of water, current water condition of Pakistan, water conservation, importance of water conservation and tips for water conservation. During the lecture, simple questions were asked to the students and they respond very actively. Most of them answered correctly and prizes were given to the active participants. Ms. Shagufta, Branch Head, IIUI School, gave the concluding remarks and finally, souvenirs were distributed among the teachers who prepared the students for this activity. Indeed it was a successful event and students really enjoyed the activity.

CCRD has started a series of awareness raising activities on water conservation as an essential part of the D-8 funded project titled “Feasibility Study of Provision of Safe Drinking Water through Water Conservation” and first event was organised at Iqra Pilot School & Collage (IPSC) I-8/3 Islamabad on October 7, 2021. During the first event, more than hundred students along with their teachers and Principal, Mr. Iqbal Ahmad Khan, participated. Activity was started with recitation of Holy Quran and opening remarks were given by Dr. Toqeer Ahmad, Assistant Professor, CCRD. During his remarks, importance of water conservation was highlighted. He appreciated the student who actively participated in the poster competition held on the same day. A presentation was given by Ms. Saima Naz, Research Associate of the D-8 Project, to the participant regarding importance of water conservation. During the presentation short questions were asked to the students which they respond actively. A short walk with the slogans of water saving was performed. Souvenirs were distributed among the winners of the poster competitions, actively participating students and teachers. Closing remarks were given by the Principal of the Iqra Pilot School & College (IPSC) I-8/3 Islamabad.

UNESCO Chair on Knowledge Systems for IWRM supervised awareness walk at campus level “Clean and Green Pakistan” on December 5, 2019. The theme of the walk was to highlight the significance of clean working environment for healthy, working productivity and to raise awareness to keep the University Campus and surroundings Clean and Green.
