The COMSATS University Islamabad (CUI), Embassy of France and Embassy of German jointly organized Panel Discussion on the most current and pressing global issue of “Climate Change and Security” on November 11, 2019 in COMSATS University Islamabad. His Excellency Ambassador of Germany to Pakistan Mr. Bernhard Schlagheck was the chief guest of the event.
His Excellency Ambassador of Germany in Pakistan had a meeting with the Rector CUI, Prof. Dr. Raheel Qamar T.I. along-with other senior CUI Officials which include Registrar CUI, Dr. Faheem Qureshi; Dean Faculty of Sciences, Prof. Dr. Arshad Saleem Bhatti; Dean Faculty of Architecture and Design Dr. Samra Mohsin Khan and Head International Office Mr. Ali Tawab Baloch with his team also attended the meeting. Rector briefed the Ambassador about the academic, research and organizational achievements of CUI. Prof. Arshad Saleem Bhatti gave an overview about the ongoing research collaboration between CUI and German universities. The Ambassador admired CUI’s remarkable growth within two decades and expressed his pleasure on learning about the active research cooperation between both sides. The Rector also presented a shield as a memoir to the visiting German Ambassador.
The Ambassador of German proceed to the venue of the Panel Discussion. In his opening remarks at the Panel Discussion the German Ambassador thanked CUI for providing this great platform of discussion on the imperative topic of Climate Change and Security. He said that he is especially delighted to witness that the German and French sides are sitting together to discuss a common and alarming global subject.
The panel of experts consisted of Dr. Adrien Detgas from Adelphi, Germany; Mr. Bastien Alex from Institute of International and Strategic Relations, France; Dr. Muhammad Abid from the Center for Climate Research and Development (CCRD), CUI, Pakistan and Dr. Imran Syed, Head Center for Policy Studies, CUI, Pakistan.
Each speaker gave a detailed talk discussing the Climate security risks, challenges and prevention strategies. The panel discussion centered on the need to have global preventive foreign and defense policies in place at the governmental and institutional levels to tackle this serious problem. The moderator of the discussion Dr. Anjum Rasheed an Associate Professor at the Center for Climate Research and Development, steered the discussion on the need to act now and take solid measures to prevent crisis and reduce threats to global peace before they become acute. The audience shared their comments and asked relevant questions at the end which were answered and discussed in detail by the panelists.
Head Department of Meteorology Dr. Kalim Ullah presented his concluding remarks thanking both the German and French Embassies and CUI departments for making the event a success.
At the end, souvenir shields were presented to all the panelists and a group photo marked the end of a successful event.
