International GIS Day-2016 “Geospatial Science and CPEC Challenges”

Department of Meteorology celebrated International GIS Day - 2016 on December 1st 2016. The event was organized by Earth & Atmospheric Remote Sensing Research Group. The theme for this year GIS Day was “Geospatial Science and CPEC Challenges”.

GIS Day is a global event for thousands of users of GIS technology. These days GIS has become part and parcel of research and is being used in spatial decision making processes and in the near future, GIS will take a center stage in the way we think and make decision in our everyday activities.

Our aim was to raise public awareness of the importance of Geographic Information System (GIS); the applications of GIS and to sensitize the stakeholders towards advocating the role of GIS in our society. The event helped to promote awareness of geographic information systems (GIS), and how we use this evolving tool to analyze our world. With such a vision, this event brought together researchers, educators, governmental and non-governmental organizations and policy makers working in different institutions to share ideas and propose research priorities in the field.

Mr. Tahir Naeem (Director P&D, CIIT) was the Chief Guest of the event. Prof. Dr. Athar Hussain (Chairman, Department of Meteorology) and Dr. Kalim Ullah (HOD, Department of Meteorology) were the principal organizers. Prof. Dr. Athar Hussain delivered the opening remarks. The event comprised of four presentations from National Experts. They emphasized upon the applications of GIS in China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

About 100 participants from different organizations and universities were present at the event.
