International GIS Day - 2015

Department of Meteorology celebrated International GIS Day - 2015 on Wednesday, 18th November 2015. The International GIS Day-2015 is a global event held on the third Wednesday of November each year hence providing a forum for users of GIS technology to highlight real-world applications that are making a difference in our society. With such a vision, this event brings together researchers, educators, governmental and non-governmental organizations and policy makers working in different institutions to share ideas and propose research priorities in the field.

Prof. Dr. Raheel Qamar,T.I, (Dean ORIC / Incharge Campus) was the Chief Guest of the event. Mr. Ahmed Abdelrahmain (Ambassador of Sudan), Mr. Hussni Abu Ghoosh (Cultural Attaché, Palestine) and Mr. Tirtha Aryal (Councilor / Deputy Head of Mission, Nepal) also graced the occasion with their presence. Prof. Dr. Athar Hussain, Chairman Department of Meteorology delivered the opening remarks. The event comprised of seven presentations from National and International Experts. They emphasized upon the applications of GIS in different research areas.

Inauguration of Atmospheric LIDAR System was done by Prof. Dr. Raheel Qamar, T.I, (Dean ORIC / Incharge Campus), along with respected diplomates his Excellency Mr. Ahmed Abdelrahmain (Ambassador of Sudan), Mr. Hussni Abu Ghoosh (Cultural Attaché, Palestine) and Mr. Tirtha Aryal (Councilor / Deputy Head of Mission, Nepal), and Dr. Kalim Ullah, Head of the Meteorology Department and Dr. Abdul Aziz Khan Advisor of the International Office CIIT, Islamabad. The subject LIDAR system is a first ever in Pakistan to study the Air quality at a very high Spatio-temporal level. The system is acquired from Professor Janet Elizabeth Nichol, Department of Land Surveying and Geo-informatics, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hong Kong. Acquisition of the LIDAR system is due to research collaboration between Prof. Janet and Dr. Muhammad Imran Shahzad, Assistant Professor, Department of Meteorology, CIIT. System is in operation under the Earth & Atmospheric Remote Sensing Research Group (EARS), Department of Meteorology.

More than 200 participants from different organizations and universities were present at the event. Dr. Aqeel Ahmed Kidwai (Chairman, Organizing Committee) delivered the concluding remarks.
