ORIC - Professional Development (ORIC-PD), COMSATS Institute of Information Technology, Islamabad organized a two day workshop on “Teaching with care” on 27-28th September 2016 at its Islamabad Campus. The lead resource person for the workshop was Dr. Waqar Husain Sakoon, Assistant Professor, Department of Humanities, CIIT, Islamabad Campus.
Dr. Sakoon is a renowned clinical psychologist with over 17 years of experience in clinical psychotherapy. He holds a PhD in Clinical Psychology and has worked extensively on child psychology and psychotherapeutic practice with several prestigious national/international agencies.
Participants from various departments of The University of Wah, Wah Cantonment, University of Engineering and Technology, Taxila, Dadabhoy Institute of Higher Education, Karachi, CIIT, Islamabad, Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto University (SMBBU), Larkana and Pakistan Institute of Engineering and Applied Sciences (PIEAS), Islamabad participated in the workshop.
The workshop comprised of six sessions including sessions on individual differences in learning, theory of psychopathology and mental health, common psychological and neurological problems, skill for psychological counselling, steps and methods in psychological counseling as well as a roleplay counselling session. Important areas pertaining to child and adolescent psychology were discussed along with the approaches to their management in an academic environment. The participants practiced exercises on child counselling and shared with each other, their real life experiences with students. It was also apprised during the workshop that management of psychological rooted depression and anxiety will be key problems of concern for public health professionals after 2020. It is therefore imperative for school and university counselors to be trained in dealing with students suffering from psychological ailments and behavioral problems.
ORIC-PD is planning focused workshops in this area to raise awareness and provide requisite training to professionals.
