Bachelor of Design Program

Program Overview

‘The mission of four year B.DES (Bachelor of Design) degree program is to prepare design graduates for employment in media, communication and design industry by adopting a practice led approach to design education and offering them an opportunity to specialize in a variety of design disciplines such as Communication Design, Illustration, Interactive and Moving Image’.

The four years of Bachelor of Design offers the students an opportunity to experiment in a variety of genres and finally choose from a multitude of design disciplines such as Graphics, Illustration, Interactive design and Moving Image.

Studio practice and contextual studies will allow the students to draw upon their material, culture, history, sociology, literature, art theory and design practice. Study of basic marketing and management skills will enable the students to understand the business environment or establish their own design practice.

The course encourages and enables students to develop knowledge of the context of Design and its adept application. The curriculum includes opportunities to understand the requirements of photography, Print production, costing and basic management.

Program Objectives

Following are the primary objectives of B.DES program that shape our curriculum and academic calendar:
The degree program aims to offer students an informed context for the development of a personal visual practice by the development of:

  • A broad range of practical, analytical and academic skills to enable the articulation of personal issues and concerns within the production and study of design
  • A visually literate approach to the production and appreciation /debate of design
  • Analytical and critical skills for the study and practice of design, as a basis for original research at undergraduate level
  • Provide a thorough understanding of the process of design as a problem solving activity
  • Awareness, understanding and analytical ability regarding the local and international context of the design problems.

Strategic Plan

Main elements of the strategic plan to achieve program mission and objectives are:

  1. Curriculum design: Core subjects, Elective subjects. A wide variety of skills / subjects/ tools are offered within the three core subjects of Design Presentation, Design & Technologies and History of Philosophy of Design.

  2. Studio Practice: Concept building and creative nurturing through extensive studio practice, applying theoretical knowledge.

  3. Practical Projects: Small-scale practical projects compatible with contemporary theoretical and technological advancements within design industry throughout the degree program, and one Thesis Project in the final semester; which may become basis for winning a good job.

  4. Internships: Compulsory summer internships to give hands-on experience to students. Internships are arranged by the University.

  5. Co-curricular activities: like academic clubs, participating in national and international competitions and exhibitions.

Eligibility Criteria

In compliance of the decision of 98th meeting of the COMSATS Executive Committee (CEC), held on 4th June 2016, henceforth the minimum criteria for admissions into Undergraduate Architecture and design programs shall be 60% aggregate marks and 50% aggregate marks in all other Undergraduate programs, applicable across the CUI system from Fall 2016 intake and onwards.
