Seminar on

Impact of Climate Change on Biodiversity Patterns of Different Mammalian Species of Potwar, Pakistan

Speaker:

Dr. Abdul Ghaffar

Assistant Professor, Department of Meteorology, Centre for Climate Research& Development, CIIT, Islamabad

The impact of climate change and biodiversity patterns from Late Miocene-Pleistocene time (10Ma-1.6Ma) of Potwar (Siwaliks) is evaluated. Terrestrial plant-eating mammals offer an excellent proxy method to study the past climates and their impacts on biodiversity patterns. For this purpose the fossil material available from the Potwar Plateau is studied during the time in question. The available fossil record from this region depicts the modern rainfall distribution developed at about 7 to 5 million years ago (7-5Mya) when East Asia remained unexpectedly humid while Europe experienced a transient phase of strong aridity. Similarly 5My fossil records of mammalian fauna from flood plain ecosystems of Potwar shows a substantial change in terrestrial ecosystems (species richness and ecological structure) in relation to vegetation change.

Between 8.5-6.0Mya, C4 Savannah replaced C3 forests and Woodland. Geohistorical records of different mammalian herbivores species and teeth ecomorphological data show three patterns of diversity as; some herbivores species maintained their dietry habits and disappeared while other herbivore species altered their dietry habits to include increasing amount of C4 plants and persisted till end of Pleistocene during the vegetation transition while the few lineages that persisted through the vegetation transition show isotopic enrichment of C values over time. These results show the evidences of long-term climatic forcing of vegetation structure and mammalian diversity patterns in the sub-Continent (SI).
