The Swiss Ambassador H.E. Mr. Thomas Kolly visited COMSATS University Islamabad (CUI) on Feb. 8, 2019. He was invited upon invitation of the Rector during visit of a three-member delegation comprising of Prof. Stylianos E Antonarakis, Professor, University of Geneva Medical School, Switzerland; Prof. Sergey Nikolaev, Researcher, Gustave Roussy Cancer Center; France; and Dr. Muhammad Ansar, University of Geneva Medical School, Switzerland.

The International Office of CUI received the delegation. They were shown campus facilities like class rooms, labs, data center, Junaid Zaidi library, student service center, day care center of the campus, Department of Bio Sciences, etc. The delegation had meeting with the top management of CUI. The meeting was attended by Rector, CUI; Registrar CUI; Dean, Faculty of Sciences, CUI; Head International Office, CUI; faculty of Biosciences Department of CUI; and team of International office of CUI.

The Rector warmly welcomed the delegation. The Head International Office gave brief presentation about CUI. The Rector elaborated rich research culture of CUI and different research initiatives CUI is conceiving to augment the quality of research and teaching of campuses of CUI. He offered to host delegations of academicians and researchers from Switzerland to visit CUI for carrying out joint scientific research between institutions of both countries. Dean Sciences briefed the delegation about CUI’s existing research collaboration with CERN and EPFL.

H.E Mr. Thomas Kolly, Ambassador, Embassy of Switzerland to Pakistan thanked CUI officials for their hospitality and admired CUI’s impressive profile. He especially mentioned about different Scholarships being offered by the Government of Switzerland for Pakistani scholars to continue higher education in Switzerland. He further emphasized to encourage faculty exchange between the universities of both countries.

Professor Stylianos E Antonarakis, Professor, University of Geneva Medical School, Switzerland who were geneticists showed great interest to strengthen and take further academic and research cooperation between University of Geneva and CUI. They also discussed their research areas with the faculty of Biosciences and identified common interests.

The Rector CUI presented shield to the Hon’ble Ambassador of Switzerland to Pakistan. In addition, souvenirs were presented to the guests coming from University of Geneva Medical School and Gustave Roussy Cancer Center. A group photo was also taken.

Upon conclusion of the formal meeting, a session of joint research talk was organized with the faculty of Biosciences. Head International Office, CUI in his opening remarks welcomed and thanked the Swiss Ambassador for gracing the session with his presence and the researchers for coming all the way from Switzerland. He expressed that the visit had laid the foundation of cooperation which will go a long way.

Dr. Maleeha Azam, Assistant Professor, Biosciences Department, CUI delivered a synopsis of their research work in the Translational Genomics Lab which is headed by Rector, CUI, Prof. Dr. Raheel Qamar. She explained about work on Genetic Spectrum Base of Diseases in Pakistan covering novel gene discovery and replication study. Dr. Stylianos from University of Geneva Medical School presented his findings on Consanguinity: Recessive, High Impact Variants. He explained matchmaking between genes and genome and how genotypes link genomes with disorders. Dr. Serge from Gustave Roussy Cancer Center presented his talk on Tumor Genetic Profiling in Hereditary Cancer Susceptibility Syndrome with DNA Repair Deficiency. He shared his case studies on genetic disorders causing cancer. A question answer session by the participants mainly from faculty members of Biosciences Department was held along-with interactive discussions on the issues.

H.E Mr. Thomas Kolly, Ambassador of Switzerland to Pakistan addressed the audience. He expressed his satisfaction on witnessing high level scientific exchange of research between the two universities. He expressed that we speak the same language of innovation, research and science. He was thrilled to see this wonderful globalization where Swiss and Pakistanis spoke together and worked together. He added that he is looking forward to a favorable cooperation between the two countries.

After a group click, the Ambassador and other delegates called off the campus on a cheerful note to conclude a productive day.
