Centre for Climate Research and Development (CCRD), COMSATS University Islamabad organized a very informative and interesting talk titled, “Investigating the Influence of Meteorological Parameters on Atmospheric Electric Field Variations for Islamabad and Balakot, Pakistan”. The Talk was delivered by, Dr. Samia Faiz Gurmani, Senior Scientist, Centre for Earthquake Studies NCP, Islamabad Pakistan. On Thursday, 07 March 2019
02:00 - 03:00 pm, Library Auditorium, COMSATS University Islamabad (CUI). Participants were from COMSATS university Islamabad .
Dr. Samia Faiz Gurmani briefly described about NCP research activities and her project. The main focus of her talk was about the project Investigating the Influence of Meteorological Parameters on Atmospheric Electric Field Variations for Islamabad and Balakot , Pakistan
The Atmospheric Electric Field (AEF) is an important parameter to study the Global Atmospheric Electric Circuit (GAEC) which links the space environment with terrestrial weather. Fair-weather surface atmospheric electric field is measured for Islamabad and Balakot stations. It has been found the diurnal, annual and seasonal atmospheric electric field evolution in fair weather showed variation at these sites. These variation shows a single peak in case of Islamabad and double peak for Balakot. The effect of meteorological parameters like temperature, pressure and relative humidity is observed on seasonal and annual atmospheric electric field. The result of fair weather atmospheric electric field with respect to meteorological factors represent a positive correlation with temperature, and a negative correlation with relative humidity and atmospheric pressure. The diurnal variation is also compared with the well-known standard Carnegie curve and found a clear deviation. These measurements of fair weather atmospheric electric field are compared with the land-based results all over the world and found a good agreement with respect to local and global environment.
In the end, vote of thanks was given by Dr. Toqeer Ahmed, Assistant professor, CCRD, CUI; and a souvenir was presented by Dr. Anjum Rasheed to the guest speaker. Finally, the refreshments were served to participants.
