Mobility is a fundamental part of higher education, and scholarships and fellowships are one valuable tool to facilitate this; or in the case of early career researchers for example, they can be vital.

Coventry University’s strategy ‘Creating Better Futures’ enshrines our commitment to building a research culture that addresses major social challenges and fosters international collaboration.

It is this strategy that has led us to proudly host a special Coventry University ACU Fellowship. Focussing on three of our research centres and supporting collaboration with other ACU members in four countries, this fellowship is a key development opportunity.

We are also committed to supporting our undergraduate and postgraduate students with international mobility. It is well documented that students who have a period of mobility overseas subsequently show more engagement with their course, better learning outcomes, higher levels of satisfaction with their university and better employment outcomes. In 2017/8 we topped the UK’s Higher Education Statistics Agency’s ranking for international student mobility for the third year running by providing more overseas experiences for our students than any other UK university.

This is another area in which Coventry has worked with the ACU; in the last two years alone we have hosted 15 Chevening scholars and 4 Commonwealth (CSC) scholars. The Chevening and CSC scholarship programmes are particularly valuable for universities as they have the potential to attract talented international students to the UK, who may be from countries that are underrepresented in the student population, thereby enhancing the international experience for all students.

Most recently, we’re also proud that Coventry PhD researcher Maurice Beseng was awarded anACU Blue Charter Fellowship to travel to the University of Buea – a fellow ACU member institution – in Cameroon to look at ‘ghost gear’ (fishing nets left in the oceans) in the context of unregulated fishing in Cameroon. It is only by working in collaboration in this way that researchers can truly address the grand challenges that we are all faced with globally.
