Two students visited Centre for Climate Research and Development (CCRD), COMSATS University Islamabad for five days from 22 July to 26 July, 2019 to carry out the research activities.
One of student was Mr. Hamza Sarwar. He is doing MS Environmental Engineering from US-Pakistan Center for Advance Studies in Water, Mehran University of Engineering and Technology, Jamshoro, Sindh. His research title was “Assessment of climate change impacts and designing of climate smart agriculture practices for wheat crop using DSSAT model”
Dr. Ishfaq Ahmad, Assistant Professor CCRD, described him the basic of decision support system for agro-technology transfer (DSSAT), minimum data required to run the model. He also helped him in creation of model files, calibration and evaluation of model, Climate change impact assessment and development of climate smart practices. He further helped him in creation of outlines and write-up for his thesis.
Second student was Ms. Hafiza Hamrah Kanwal, she is doing PhD from the department of computer science, Chongqing University of Posts and Telecommunications, China. Her research title was “Yield forecasting of wheat using Machine Learning Algorithms in Punjab Pakistan”.
Dr. Ishfaq Ahmad explained to her the basics of remote sensing, machine learning and about satellite images. He also helped her in downloading of satellite images, pre-processing of images such as atmospheric correction, mosaicing, clipping, layer staking. He also helped her in the training of shape files, land cover classification using machine learning and developed the yield forecasting model using PCA and LASSO analyses and further guided her in creation of outlines for her research paper.
