A Memorandum of Understanding today has been signed between the Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO) and Qatar University on the establishment of ISESCO Chair of the Alliance of Civilizations, at the University.
The MoU was signed for ISESCO by its Director General, Dr Abdulaziz Othman Altwaijri, and for the university by its President, Dr Hassan Rashid Al-Derham.
The Chair is aimed to contribute to promoting dialogue of cultures and civilizations, consolidating religious co-existence, countering hatred, and addressing stereotypes about the Other in university curricula, publications and media in the Islamic world and in the West.
In addition to establishing the Chair, the MoU provides for implementing an annual programme of activities, including lectures, meetings, training sessions, symposia, seminars, and workshops aimed at enhancing dialogue of cultures and civilizations. Under the MoU, studies and specialized databases will also be prepared and disseminated, postgraduate research scholarships will be provided, and awards will be granted for outstanding research works in subjects related to the Chair’s action fields.
The Chair is also aimed at promoting objective intercultural studies dealing with Orientalism and Occidentalism in a bid to enhance mutual understanding and coexistence, produce generations of graduates equipped with advanced techniques to conduct dialogue and address religious and cultural intolerance and extremism. It is also meant to support scientific research and advanced genuine studies in its areas of competence, in addition to highlighting the Islamic civilization’s genius and its cultural and intellectual contribution to the prosperity of humanity, and harnessing all such components to the integration of civilizations.
