UNESCO Chair supervised a final year undergraduate student’s project titled “Diagnostic Hydrological Analysis of River Jehlum” of BS Civil Engineering programme. One graduating student secured admission in MSc Flood Risk Management at UNESCO IHE Delft Institute for Water Education, using UNESCO Chair platform.

Prof. Dr. Tayyeb Akram, UNESCO Water Chair COMSATS participated in the International Conference of UNESCO Chair’s on “Mobilizing UNESCO Science Chairs for Policy Action towards the 2030 Agenda”, organized by the UNESCO – Division of Science Policy and Capacity-Building Sector for Natural Sciences with the cooperation of the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, held at Geneva, Switzerland. 112 member representatives of 86 UNESCO Chairs and Networks in Natural Sciences, out of the 172 existing, participated in the Conference. The conference aimed to strengthen the UNECSO Chair’s collaboration towards implementation of the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals. During, the declaration signatory ceremony of “The Geneva Actions on Human Water Security” was held at University of Geneva in which more than 50 people from 20 different countries participated.

Brief Description:

UNESCO and Czech Republic are inviting applications for fellowships program. There is no possibility to change neither the field of study nor the study program once the fellowship is awarded.

Course Level: Bachelor’s and Master’s

Subject(s): 

In line with UNESCO and Czech Republic’s commitment to maximize capacity-building, candidates who wish to study in the fields of natural resources and environment, forestry water and landscape management, technology and environmental engineering, economics and finance would be given priority. 

Note:  There is no possibility to change the field of study/study program once the fellowship is awarded.

Grants:       

  • Tuition is free of charge
  • A monthly allowance of 14,000 Czech Crowns (1 euro = approximately 25 crowns) for students undertaking bachelor and master’s study programs (Should this allowance be considered insufficient, the applying Member State may consider granting a partial contribution, or, the candidate may have to seek other funds from private sources to complement this allowance)
  • Accommodation at the student dormitories at reduced rates (to be paid by the fellow from the monthly allowance mentioned in (2) above)
  • Access to meals (to be paid with the monthly allowance) in the student dining halls
  • Access to discounts for urban transportation
  • The Ministry of Health provides medical care to fellows.

Eligibility:           

  • Requirements:  English / French
  • There is no possibility to change neither the field of study nor the study program once the fellowship is awarded. The donor country highly recommends the following field of studies: Medicine, Natural Resources and Environment, Forestry Engineering, Tropical Agriculture, Water and Landscape Management, Environment, Ecology and Environmental Protection, Mechanical Engineering, Energy Engineering. Preference will be given to students who will take these fields of study.
  • Nationality: Foreign students can apply for these scholarships.
  • College Admission Requirement
  • Entrance Requirement: Applicants must have their previous degree.
  • Test Requirement: No
  • English Language Requirements: Applicants from outside the home country will often need to meet specific English language/other language requirements in order to be able to study there.

UNESCO, Hammad Bin Isa Al-Khalifa Prize

Prof. Dr. Tayyeb Akram, Director CIIT-Wah, Dr. Asma Younas, Principal Scientific Officer, UNESCO Chair on Knowledge Systems for IWRM, Dr. Tamkeen Fatima Jafri, Assistant professor Management Sciences Department participated in the International workshop organized by UNESCO and PMD on “Standardizing Flood Forecasting and Warning Approaches in Transboundary Catchments” at Lahore.

A detailed introduction of the UNESCO Water Chair, its mandate, mission, achievements, current activities and future plans was given by Dr. Asma. The experts from Irrigation Departments of Pakistan, Professors from distinguished universities in Pakistan and Japan appreciated this initiative and intended to extend their support to UNESCO Water Chair for the achievement of its mandate.

The recommendations given by the participants in the workshop are:

  • Impart training to young professionals, relevant departments and local stakeholders
  • Sensitivity analysis and authenticity of the ground data need to be further considered
  • Capacity building at the grass root level to the top is required to develop ownership
  • Training on flood management alternatives should include flood preparedness 
  • Climate resilience measures need to be included as part of the integrated flood management training of local communities 
  • Training of data collectors to standardize data
