Unique event providing opportunity for students and faculty to attend the seminars and interactive sessions and stimulating panel discussions in the fields of nano science and medical Physics. Three eminent scientists/ experts from USA, in the fields of nano technology , Medical Physics and cancer research are visiting COMSATS Institute of Information Technology Islamabad on Feb 20-23, 2017. The event is organized by UIUC Directorate, PD&HRD to provide a direct interaction opportunity for students/Faculty with renowned scientist from University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and The University of Chicago. The sessions include panel discussions on innovation-based Entrepreneurship, Technical Talks on nanotechnology and Medical Physics. There will be informal interactive sessions wherein students/young faculty can interact with experts to discuss on topics of mutual interest in the relevant field and find ways and means for collaborative research in respective areas thereof. The activity area of each expert/scientist can be found on links given at the end. Brief activity areas of each scientist is as follows; young faculty/MS, PhD students working in the relevant area are encouraged to interact intensively for their current and future research activities, projects and collaborations.
1. Munir H. Nayfeh PhD, Professor of Physics at University of Illinois Urbana Champaign is affiliated faculty at the Centeer for Nano Science and Technology and the Frederick Seitz Materials Research Laboratory. He is listed among the top 14 well known Nanotechnologists in the Muslim world. (http://muslim-science.com/14-most-exciting-nanotechnologists-from-the-muslim-world/). Dr. Nayfeh is the founder and president of NanoSi Advanced Technologies, Inc. and the inventor of the company’s patented process for creating silicon nanoparticles. He holds the largest number of patents in the field of nano silicon worldwide including 19 issued US and European patents, along with four pending US patents.
Dr. Nayfeh has developed an active experimental program to study the multi-photon (nonlinear) dissociation of molecules to enhance dissociation selectivity. He was the first to demonstrate isotope separation using this process. He was also the first physicist to examine the behavior of hydrogen molecules in intense laser fields, and his seminal work in this area initiated a completely new area of research in molecular Coulomb explosions.
2. Dr. Irfan Ahmad is Executive Director at the Center for Nanoscale Science and Technology, Resident Faculty at the Micro and Nanotechnology Laboratory, and Research Faculty at the Department of Agricultural and Biological Engineering, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He also is co-Site/Innovation Director for the National Science Foundation-funded Industry/University Cooperative Research Center- the Center for Advanced Research in Drying; he also is Core Faculty at the Center for South Asian and Middle Eastern Studies. As an entrepreneur,Dr. Ahmad was involved with IT24, an information technology company, and Buruj, a sensors development startup. His recent entrepreneurial endeavor is- Avicenna Community Health Center, which takes a systems approach to healthcare delivery through an integrated preventive and curative healthcare.
3. Dr. Aydogan is an Associate Professor and Director of Medical Physics at the University of Chicago Pritzker School Of Medicine. He also is Affiliated Faculty and Chief of Medical Physics at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He has expertise in medical physics and cancer research and treatments. His research specifically relates to computational simulation of radiation damage in human body down to DNA level, tumor tracking and targeting in real-time. This includes development of theranostic and personalized cancer treatment techniques, development and implementation of Total Marrow Irradiation techniques for the treatment of advanced hematological malignancies in adult and pediatric patients, bone marrow sparing IMRT in malignancies contained in pelvic region, development of localization and immobilization techniques, image guided brachytherapy applications in GYN cancers, and measurement and characterization of 3D dynamic therapy dose distribution. He has dedicated his career to improve the quality of cancer care. Currently, Dr. Aydogan has three active clinical trials including "Intensity Modulated Total Marrow Irradiation (IM-TMI) for Advanced Hematologic Malignancies," as well as two multi institutional Phase II studies under IRB review based on the encouraging results obtained with his previous clinical studies that were recently completed. His patented work on AuNP-DG, a targeted nanogold contrast agent for theranostic cancer applications is currently in the animal experiments phase.
