Islamabad. Deemah AlYahya, Secretary General, Digital Cooperation Organization visited COMSATS University Islamabad on Wednesday during her three-day visit to Pakistan. She was leading four-member delegation from DCO accompanied by senior officials of Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication, Islamabad. AlYahya is a renowned digital economy expert and advocate of digital literacy, empowerment and training in communities traditionally marginalized by the ‘digital divide’.

Secretary General DCO visited various digital facilities in COMSATS University Islamabad and was briefed about CUI Data Center, Digitalization of Library, Video Conferencing Facility, Medical Image Processing Research Group (MIPRG) and Medical Imaging and Diagnostics Lab (MIDL). A meeting with senior officials at CUI including Prof. Dr. Shahid A Khan, Head, Office of Research, Innovation and Commercialization; Prof. Dr. Sajjad A. Madani, Registrar; Prof. Dr. Shahzad A. Malik, Dean, Faculty of Engineering; Prof. Dr. Aftab Khan, Dean, Faculty of Sciences; Dr. Sohail Asghar, Professor, Department of Computer Science; Ali Tawab Baloch, Head, International Office; Dr. Majid Iqbal Khan, Head, Department of Computer Science ensued the campus visit. 

Prof. Madani gave a detailed presentation about CUI. He informed that the COMSATS University Islamabad is a public sector university having seven campuses in Pakistan having five faculties, twenty two academic departments and nine state of the art research centers. He said that CUI offers more than 100 degree programs at BS, MS and PhD level to over 34,000 students, including over 500 international students. Prof. Madani also informed regarding the special initiatives of CUI on digitization, internationalization and technology innovation patronized by Prof. Dr. Muhammad T. Afzal, Rector CUI. 

Secretary General DCO in her presentation highlighted aims, objectives, goals of DCO. She briefed about DCO vision of having collaboration among its seven-member counties including Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Jordan, Kuwait, Pakistan, Nigeria and Oman. She said that the purpose of the visit was to unlock the full potential of DCO Forum for realizing the Digital Pakistan Vision of the Government of Pakistan and finding potential areas for developing digital cooperation between COMSATS University Islamabad and DCO’s member nations. She also emphasized on women and youth empowerment in the growing digital economy.

The Secretary General showed special interest in COMSATS University’s Center for Policy Studies and Business Incubation Center and offered COMSATS University to become an observer institution of DCO. She also invited faculty members of the university to be part of the DCO’s accelerator program. 

Both sides agreed on enhancing cooperation among universities of DCO member countries. Head International Office of COMSATS University was assigned as focal person for initiating collaboration with DCO through the respective Ministry.

Dr. Toqeer Ahmed, Assistant Professor of CCRD, CUI participated in 19th Freedom Gate Pakistan Alumni Meeting and celebrations of 70 Years of Pak German Relationship at Lahore on 5-7 November 2021. H.E. Mr. Bernhard Schlagheck, Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Pakistan gave the opening remarks and Key note address was given by Honorable Governor of Punjab, Chaudhary Mohammad Sarwar on 6th November 2021. Participants visited the stalls at the German Pakistan Relationship celebrations at Alhamra Arts Council. At dinner reception, German Pak Cooperation Success stories were discussed. What Alumni did in 2021 and their future ideas for 2022 were discussed. Four ideas were selected through voting. Finally, concluding remarks were delivered by Ms. Birgit Lamm, Head of Country Office, Pakistan.

Visit of Faculty and Research Students to KTML 

Dr. Toqeer Ahmed, Assistant Professor, CCRD organized the visit of research students along with their supervisor, Dr. Safia Zahid, Assistant Professor, Department of Chemistry to Kohinoor Textile Mills Limited (KTML), Rawalpindi under the Industry Academia Linkage program on 16 February 2021. 

HR department of KTML provided information regarding facilities established like recycling and treatment of wastewater, self-generation electricity, blood donor society, school for the employee’s children and resident facilities at KTML, Rawalpindi. Wastewater treatment plant was visited by the faculty and students of CUI. Research students gained the excellent information provided during the visit.  Such kind of visits can enhance the industry academia linkages in future.

The Coordinator General of Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Ministerial Standing Committee on Scientific and Technological Cooperation (COMSTECH) Prof. Dr. Muhammad Iqbal Choudhary visited COMSATS University Islamabad (CUI) on July 16, 2020. Prof. Choudhary was warmly welcomed by Rector CUI Prof. Dr. Raheel Qamar. The formal meeting was attended by the senior management of CUI including the Rector, Registrar, Dean Sciences, Eminent Professors, Director CUI Lahore Campus/ Executive Director Inter Islamic Network on Information Technology (INIT) who joined meeting through video link and the Head International Office. Program Officer COMSTECH also attended the meeting.

The Rector gave details of different CUI activities, its engagements with OIC member countries, scholarships and research fellowships given to OIC member countries and long list of activities of INIT. In addition, he gave different research initiatives which CUI took for Covid testing and supply of ventilators during the pandemic. Prof. Dr. Arshad Bhatti gave details of his research work especially with Philips. The Registrar gave details of different research activities, patents filled/ awarded and their commercialization. The Executive Director INIT/ Director CUI Lahore campus gave details of different activities of INIT.

The Coordinator General COMSTECH appreciated CUI efforts for offering different scholarships/ fellowships, research & development activities for combatting Covid-19; and activities of INIT. He briefed about the future areas and priorities of COMSTECH to work jointly with CUI. Various possibilities to enhance Science and Technology cooperation were mutually discussed. Prof. Choudhary proposed further cooperation with CUI with a focus on African countries, women in science and Muslim minorities in non-Muslim countries.

The Coordinator General COMSTECH further suggested to establish a COMSTECH funded consortium of excellence which will offer Research Fellowships of 6-12-month duration, opportunities of mobilities for distinguish scholars to travel among OIC world for structured research & development activities and to offer technical trainings on scientific equipment(s) among the member countries.

Coordinator General COMSTECH informed that INIT is one of the most active networks of COMSTECH. It was agreed to further mobilize INIT to initiate work on Artificial Intelligence and Big Data. It was discussed that INIT should hold multiple events in year 2021, at least one each in the geographical areas of African, Arabian, and Central Asian countries.

It was also agreed to sign collaboration between the two entities to further strengthen collaborative activities as well as work jointly for the betterment of Muslim ummah.

At the end, a CUI memento was presented to the honorable guest by Rector CUI and a group photo was snapped.

On January 20, 2020, Mr. Ali Tawab Baloch, Head International Office CUI, met with the Director General Industrial Technology Institute (CISIR), Dr. Radhika Samarasekera, in Colombo Sri Lanka. ITI also being a COMSATS Center of Excellence, the meet up was intended to explore cooperation areas including study prospects available at COMSATS University Islamabad (CUI) for the researchers, students and faculty of ITI to enhance educational linkages between both the centers of excellence.

Head IO was warmly welcomed by Dr. Radhika and her team. Dr. Radhika assured of complete support from ITI for strengthening the cooperation with CUI. Mr. Tawab explained about the current opportunities and scholarships being offered at CUI for ITI students and faculty. The projects of mutual interests were also deliberated upon during the meeting. It was mutually agreed to initiate joint activities such as student and faculty exchange from both sides and  seminars, workshops, lectures etc.

The meeting was concluded with the exchange of appreciation and a commitment to make all efforts for better cooperation in future.
