A four member delegation comprising of Dr. Simone Burkhart, Head of Scholarship and Financial Division, Dr. Katharina Fleckenstein, Head of Scholarship Section, Ms. Dagmar Beerwerth, In-charge Scholarship programs and Ms. Inge Iqbal, DAAD Director Islamabad Office visited COMSATS University Islamabad (CUI) on 6th November 2018 with the intent to learn more about CUI and our cooperation with Heidelberg University.

The delegation was shown facilities and infrastructure of CUI during round of Islamabad campus. They also witnessed the energetic musical performances being made by the students on the eve of student week.  The occasion completely captivated them and intrigued them at all levels of imagination.

A cohort of faculty members comprising of faculty from Mathematics Department, Physics Department, Bio Sciences Department, Chemistry Department and International Office met and interacted with the German delegates in a detailed meeting that was scheduled for this purpose. To showcase CUI, an impactful power-point presentation was made by Senior Manager International Office, followed by video call with Dr. Abdullah Shah who briefed the delegates about CUI’s cooperation with Heidelberg University.

Taking note of CUI, its achievements and desires, the German delegates disclosed the opportunities available with DAAD.  Senior Manager IO, on his part expressed his pleasure and communicated in detail, CUI wish-list, having a much larger scale and impact; which was positively taken.      

In the end, the closing of the visit and meeting was done on an upbeat note with exchange of mementos and an all cheerful group photo.

A high-level delegation from Ca’ Foscari University of Venice, Italy visited COMSATS University Islamabad on Tuesday, October 30, 2018. The delegation comprised of Prof. Dr. Michele Bugliesi, Rector; Prof. Tiziana Lippiello, Vice-Rector and Provost for International Relations; and Mr. Mauro Cannone, Director, Global Engagement. The purpose of the visit was to explore possible avenues of educational and research collaboration between the two universities.

The delegates were shown academic and allied facilities of CUI. The delegation expressed all praises for the lush green campus of CUI. The delegation had meeting with high officials of CUI. The COMSATS University Islamabad, Abbottabad campus, Lahore campus and Prof. Dr. Bahadur Nawab from Abbottabad Campus (currently visiting Nepal) joined the meeting through video link. After the introduction by the participants of the meeting, official of International Office of COMSATS University Islamabad gave brief presentation about COMSATS University, Islamabad. Later, Rector of Ca’ Foscari university of Venice, Italy gave presentation about their university.

The discussions resolved to identify key researchers/ faculty members from both universities. The International Office will coordinate between the two universities to identify research areas of mutual interest of the researchers of the two universities including exploring possibilities of funding research projects, student exchanges, etc. 
The Head (CS) showed interest in doing joint research in the field of cyber security, artificial intelligence and information security. He also stressed on the importance of impact based research.

While wrapping up the session, Senior Manager IO thanked the delegation and shared that COMSATS University, Islamabad is keen to foster close ties with Ca’ Foscari University of Venice. He invited the delegates to first identify focal persons and prioritize areas in two weeks’ time after which the collaboration shall be steered into a more concrete one. 
The day’s activity ended with a group photograph and exchange of souvenirs.

Mr. Dan Herman, International Officer, International Development Division, the University of Manchester, UK visited COMSATS University Islamabad (CUI) on October 22, 2018 with the aim to promote educational programs of University of Manchester to the young and vibrant students of CUI. Mr. Herman had a brief session with the students in the Video Conference Room of Junaid Zaidi Library.

At the end, Senior Manager, International Office, CUI thanked Mr. Dan Herman and offered him to have research collaboration in Biosciences Department(s) of both the universities and work closely on opportunities of student’s summer exchange. Mr. Herman appreciated CUI for giving him an opportunity to directly speak with students and answer their numerous queries. He wished to continue this engagement in the future as well. The visit was concluded on a group photo.

On enhancing global connections and engagements, the International Office team welcomed Prof. David Rooney to CUI on Friday, 19th October 2018. Dr. David is a prolific Professor of Management and Organization Studies with research focus on wisdom, leadership and the knowledge-based economy.

Upon arrival, Dr. Rooney was shown around the CUI campus and its facilities including the Junaid Zaidi Library and the Student Services Center. The professor was all praises for the lush green campus of CUI. A brief power-point presentation on COMSATS University, Islamabad was made by Senior Manager International Office as a young, reputed, fast growing, research focused and international oriented University. A short presentation highlighting Macquirie University’s strengths was also presented by Dr. Rooney.  Later, an interactive talk session with senior faculty members of Management Sciences Department and research students was conducted by Dr. Rooney.

In his talk on “Qualitative Methods- Research Design”, he compared and highlighted various aspects of quantitative and qualitative research methods and how the qualitative research goes in depth and explores micro dynamics of very specific things. Flexibility of research designs in qualitative method and the risk management strategy was also discussed. After the talk, questions regarding the topic were raised which were aptly addressed by Dr. Rooney. The comparative view of qualitative research methods elaborated by Dr. Rooney kept the students deeply engaged.

While wrapping up the session, Senior Manager International Office profusely thanked Dr. David Rooney and shared that COMSATS University, Islamabad is keen to foster close academic ties with Macquirie University. While reciprocating the thought, Dr. Rooney offered to establish an Australian Book Corner at the Junaid Zaidi Library and to further explore possibilities for collaboration.

The day’s activity ended with a group photograph and presentation of small souvenir after which Dr. Rooney departed on a positive note of his availability whenever invited again to the campus.

A delegation of CERN visited COMSATS University Islamabad (CUI), Pakistan on October 10, 2018. The delegation comprised of Ms. Charlotte Warakaulle, Director for International Relations, Prof. Federico Antinori, Spokesperson, ALICE Collaboration, Dr. Austin Ball, Technical Coordinator, CMS Collaboration, Mr. Andrzej Charkiewicz, Resources Coordinator, CMS Collaboration, Prof. Emmanuel Tsesmelis, Head of Associate and Non-Member State Relations, and Mr. Francesco Bertinelli, Head of Mechanical and Materials Engineering Group.

The purpose of the visit was to further strengthen existing collaboration between the two organizations. The delegation visited the campus and see different research facilities available in the campus. The delegation had meeting with the top management of the CUI. Executive Director COMSATS chaired the meeting. The participants from CUI includes Deans, Chairpersons, Head of Departments, etc. The officials discussed avenues of further collaboration and option of creating ALICE specific core group in CUI.

The Executive Director presented mementos to the officials of CERN. A dinner was also hosted in honour of the delegation.
