A three-member delegation from Coventry University, UK visited COMSATS University Islamabad (CUI), on January 8, 2020. The purpose of the visit was to explore possibilities of cooperation between the two universities. The delegation comprised of Deputy Vice chancellor (Research), Professor Richard Dashwood; Head School of Computing, Electronics & Mathematics, Professor Damien Foster and Professor of Systems Security at the Institute of Future Transport & Cities, Dr. Siraj Ahmed Sheikh.

The delegation was received by the Head International Office (IO) Mr. Ali tawab Baloch and his team. The delegates first met with the Rector. The Rector elaborated rich research culture of CUI and different research initiatives CUI is conceiving to augment the quality of research and teaching at all the campuses of CUI. He conveyed his interest for initiating joint scientific partnership between the academicians and researchers of CUI and Coventry University. The Deputy Vice Chancellor welcomed the idea and expressed willingness to engage in discussions for building a strategic partnership with CUI. Souvenirs were also presented to the delegates by the Rector.

Later, the delegation had meetings with Dean Business Administration, Prof. Dr. Khalid Riaz; Dean Engineering, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Abid; Dean Architecture and Design, Prof. Dr. Samra Mohsin Khan and senior faculty members from E & CE, Mathematics and Civil Engineering Departments. During the meeting, many common set of research interests were identified and discussed in the areas of Electrification, Data Science, Artificial Intelligence and Urban Design and Safety. Different options of collaboration including internships for CUI students and early career researchers at Coventry University were also discussed between the representatives of both sides. The officials from Coventry University offered to host researchers and academicians for attending trainings under their faculty development programs. It was resolved that discussions on different options of collaboration may be continued on both sides to shape up and start the collaboration.

On the invitaiton of Ambassador Yao Jing, Incharge China Study Center, COMSATS University Islamabad Campus Mr. Ali Tawab along with his team attended the Sangam Club 2019 Gala in the Embassy of Peoples Republic of China Islamabad.

Dr. Wang Zhihua Minister Counsellor (Economic and Commercial), Lt. Gen. (Retd) Muhammad Asghar, Executive Director HEC and Colonel (Rets) Zahid- R- Grewal from China State Construction Engrg. corpt LTD were the guests speakers at the event

Ms. Sabine Schultes, a Functional Lead Transport Warehouse Safety at the German multinational pharmaceutical and life sciences company Bayer, visited COMSATS University Islamabad on December 23, 2019. Ms. Schultes was accompanied by Mr. Khalid Latif who is the founder & Consultant at KL-TECHNICAL & HSE CONSULTANTS, and also a consultant & trainer at OSHES, Karachi and Mr.  Sajjad Ahmed, founder and consultant at OSHES Lahore. The guests were warmly received by the International Office team headed by Mr. Abbas Baloch, faculty members from Meteorology department and senior ex-advisor Mathematics at CUI, Dr. Attaullah Kalim.

Ms. Sabine was given a tour of the Junaid Zaidi library, where she was briefed about the processes and systems of the library. Different sections of the library were also shown to her. 

Later, she had a meeting with various faculty members of Biosciences and Meteorology department. She explained in detail the need to implement a duly regularized system of safety standards in place to ensure safety of the individuals handling the chemicals especially the shippers and the transporters who come in direct contact with the consignments. She shared her concerns over the lack of mass awareness of safety measures and emphasized that it is a matter of global concern which needs attention.

After a useful discussion and exchange of views, it was proposed that our researchers working in the relevant fields should present their projects for funding to work with the multinational industries like Bayer and others for educating and creating awareness on chemical safety. It was also agreed that Ms. Sabine would be invited again at CUI to conduct safety trainings for CUI students and faculty.

Ms. Sabine thanked the officials for the hospitality provided to her and appreciated a great deal, the positive response from CUI to work together in future.

The Head, International Office and Incharge China Study Center, COMSATS University Islamabad, Mr. Ali Tawab had a meeting with Deputy Chief of Mission Ms. Pang Chunxue, Mr. Jia Wei, First Secretary, Mr Zhang Jiegen Second Secretary along with the team of CSC and a member of Chinese University Alumni.

 

Mr. Ali Tawab welcomed the new DCM in Pakistan and ensured her that CSC will continue its role in strengthening the academic linkages and people to people contact between CUI and China.

The projects of mutual interests were also discussed and DCM appreciated the work done by the CSC previously and ensured  its support. It was also mutually agreed that CSC and Chinese Embassy will organize joint events such as seminars, workshops and lectures.

The meeting was concluded with the exchange of appreciation with commitment to make all efforts for better future.

The International Office CUI in collaboration with the French Embassy Islamabad organized a student focused event titled “Studying in France” on 22nd October 2019. Mr. Sebestian Cartier, Higher Education Attache' from Cultural and Cooperation Department of French Embassy was invited as the resource person at the event.

Mr. Sebestian Cartier first had a detailed discussion with French Alumni working in CUI on various ideas for building educational partnership between CUI and French universities. The meeting was chaired by Dr. Abdul Rauf Siddiqui, Assistnat Professor from Biosciences Department. Many ideas of joint work were proposed and funding possibilities were considered. It was decided that Mr. Sebestian Cartier will hold a presentation session for CUI Faculty on the available upcoming French scholarships.

Afterwards, Mr. Cartier delivered a very insightful presentation on the wide range of higher education opportunities available in France and explained about various French scholarships, the application and the admission process to the students. France is a country with rich culture offering best education and research facilities which makes it amongst the top study destinations of the world.

 Speaking at the event, French Alumnus at CUI; Dr. Abdul Rauf Siddiqui explained why he chose France for his higher education and shared his study experience with the student audience.
