The International Office CUI in collaboration with the French Embassy Islamabad organized a student focused event titled “Studying in France” on 22nd October 2019. Mr. Sebestian Cartier, Higher Education Attache' from Cultural and Cooperation Department of French Embassy was invited as the resource person at the event.

Mr. Sebestian Cartier first had a detailed discussion with French Alumni working in CUI on various ideas for building educational partnership between CUI and French universities. The meeting was chaired by Dr. Abdul Rauf Siddiqui, Assistnat Professor from Biosciences Department. Many ideas of joint work were proposed and funding possibilities were considered. It was decided that Mr. Sebestian Cartier will hold a presentation session for CUI Faculty on the available upcoming French scholarships.

Afterwards, Mr. Cartier delivered a very insightful presentation on the wide range of higher education opportunities available in France and explained about various French scholarships, the application and the admission process to the students. France is a country with rich culture offering best education and research facilities which makes it amongst the top study destinations of the world.

 Speaking at the event, French Alumnus at CUI; Dr. Abdul Rauf Siddiqui explained why he chose France for his higher education and shared his study experience with the student audience. As a part of mentorship program by the leading institutes of USA, early carrier researchers from CCRD CUI; Ms. Rabbia Murtaza and Mr. Muhammad Zahir visited USA from August 18, 2019 to September 29, 2019.

This program is primarily aimed at the capacity building of junior researchers from Pakistan, sponsored by the American Institute of Pakistan (AIP) studies and hosted by Dr Gabriel Filipelli from Indiana University-Purdue University, Indianapolis (IUPUI). The visits embarked by presentation on the research activities being carried out at CCRD followed by participation in seminars on various environmental issues, discussion sessions for initiating collaborative research work and visiting research laboratories. Rabia and Filipelli agreed to start working on the health impacts air pollutants; NO2, PM2.5 along with co-writing of articles on the topic. Lectures and roundtable meetings hosted by Monmouth College, Illinois and Indiana University Bloomington campus involved researchers from various nationalities for deliberations on regional environmental issues. Visit to the University of Wisconsin, Madison were hosted by Dr Jamie Schauer, a remote sensing expert working on the monitoring of pollutants in different countries, and he generously offered to support in the analyses of environmental pollutant’s samples from Pakistan.

During visit to the Water Science and Engineering Laboratory (WSEL) in the
University of Wisconsin, researchers learned about the sampling and characterizations methods of particulate matter along with methods for sectioning filters, extraction and analysis for elemental, organic and water soluble organic carbon (EC, OC and WSOC) and extraction for GCMS analysis. Insights on community forestry, habitat restoration, urban naturalists, trash boxes and recycle were obtained during visit to “Keep Indianapolis.

Dr. Toqeer Ahmed, Assistant Professor, CCRD, CUI visited ETH Zurich and Hydrosolutions Ltd at Zurich, Switzerland between 29 Sept. 2019 to 05 Oct 2019 for consultative project meeting in the framework of SDC funded project. Two persons, Dr. Toqeer Ahmed (Principal Investigator of the SDC funded Project) and Engr. Faizan ul Hassan (Project partner/ Collaborator, PCRWR, Islamabad) from Pakistan were invited to participate in the said meeting to share the outcomes of the project of applying water metering and pricing in Pakistan and to discuss future agenda. Project progress was discussed during the meetings and a presentation was given by PCRWR representative to scientists regarding different projects related to water research. Visit was arranged by Professor Dr. Wolfgang Kinzelbach and Dr. Haijing Wang to Rhine River project between Austria and Switzerland, Schynige Platte, Water Supply, Effretikon as an example of applying water meters and water supply to Zurich. The support received from ETH Zurich is highly acknowledged.

A five member delegation from Chonqing Industry Polytechnic College CQIPC, led by its Vice President Mr. Xu Yi visited CUI Lahore and Islamabad campuses from 24th-28th September, 2019. The other experts in the delegation were Deans from Faculty of Information Engineering and Faculty of Vehicle Engineering, Chairman Shihao Locomobile Manufacturing Co. Chongqing along with their coordinator Ms. Yang Yin. Delegation members were given detailed campus tours at Lahore and Islamabad campuses. They were shown state of the art facilities available for students at both the campuses. 

Various meetings of the delegates were held with CUI officials at Lahore campus for exploring mutual areas to work on. Several growing research areas were also identified for future cooperation.

At CUI, Islamabad campus, Prof. Dr. Junaid Mughal, Incharge Academics, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Abid, Dean Faculty of Engineering CUI and Mr. Ali Tawab Baloch, Head International Office and Incharge China Study Center with his team had a meeting with the delegation where mutual areas of collaboration were discussed. Dean Faculty of Engineering gave a brief presentation about CUI and Department of EE. President CQIPC proposed CUI student enrollment in IT and Automotive related programs offered at CQIPC. CUI side agreed to proceed ahead in accordance with the rules and regulations laid by PEC and HEC for such collaborative programs.
The visit was concluded on a high note after the exchange of mementoes and a group photo.

The CEO of ‘Papers Miracles and JOBS Group’ Mr. Imran Shauket along with his colleagues Ms. Elli Takagakki and Ms Saadia visited COMSATS University Islamabad on 2nd October 2019. Incharge China Study Center Mr. Ali Tawab Baloch along with his team warmly welcomed the delegation.

The delegate had a tour of the campus. They appreciated the facilities provided to the students of thee university. Incharge China Study Center briefed them about COMSATS University Islamabad and China Study Center.

The areas of mutual interests were discussed and was agreed that the Papers Miracles will teach and train students and faculty members about techniques of reusing plastic for the daily use. It was suggested that a lecture series with students on environmentally conscious projects like Plastic and Sunny Miracles to protect our environment, reduce post-harvest losses and ensure food security will be also delivered at CUI to create the awareness.

The interaction proved to be very useful and ended with presentation of souvenirs to guests.
