Islamabad: Principal Investigator and Deputy Director Tianjin Institute of Industrial Biotechnology (TIB), China, Prof. Jibin Sun visited COMSATS University Islamabad (CUI) on Sep 11, 2019. Prof. Sun was accompanied by two officials from COMSATS Headquarter. TIB has recently been added as the 22nd COMSATS Centre of Excellence and the visit was intended to discuss possibilities of research collaboration between TIB and CUI.
Upon his arrival at CUI, Prof. Sun was welcomed by Head International Office & In charge China Study Center Mr. Ali Tawab Baloch and his team. A Campus tour was conducted for the delegate showing state of the art facilities available for students including the Junaid Zaidi Library, Student Service Center and China Study Center.
During the visit of the Bio Sciences Department, fully equipped research labs were shown to the delegate. HoD Biosciences Department, Dr. Noor Ul Ain and an active researcher Dr. Maleeha Azam briefed Dr. Sun about the research being carried out.
In the formal meeting held with CUI officials from Biosciences Department including Chairman Biosciences Department, detailed presentations were delivered to the delegate providing an insight into the statistics of research and innovative achievements of CUI. Different research projects being carried out in Biotechnology research labs of CUI were also elaborated to Prof. Sun. In response, Dr. Sun appreciated COMSATS University’s rich research driven culture, and the contribution of CUI as the knowledge economy of Pakistan. He elaborated that TIB is also committed to link research and industry by tackling the key challenges hampering the commercial application of living organisms. He highlighted many areas of common interest for initiating the collaboration process. Several funding opportunities were also discussed by the participants from both sides. The officials from Office of Research, Innovation and Commercialization also gave detailed presentation about their activities and fostering research in the faculty members of the university.
Later, Rector CUI, Prof. Dr. Raheel Qamar and Registrar CUI, Dr. Faheem A Qureshi also joined the meeting. The Rector admired the dynamic research and commercialization pace of TIB having more than 700 listed patents on its credit. Dr. Jibin said that the Chinese government is keen on establishing strong educational linkages with leading universities of Pakistan.
To mark the beginning of a formal collaboration, a Document of Understanding (DoU) was signed between CUI and TIB.
The visit was concluded with presentation of souvenirs from both sides. A group photo was taken at the end.
The collaboration is expected to go a long way in further firming up the bilateral ties between China and Pakistan
