A One day seminar on “Sustainable alternatives to plastic bags: Conserving Environment” was organized by Dr. Ishfaq Ahmad, an academic researcher at the Centre for Climate Research and Development (CCRD), COMSATS University Islamabad (CUI) in collaboration with CLIMOSOL working on the environmental issues in Islamabad on Thursday 3 October 2019. Seminar aimed to raise awareness amongst wider community on environmental damages caused by plastic pollution and gearing up the Federal Govt. initiatives for conserving environment by adopting alternatives to plastic bags.

The seminar encompassed several activities including; oral talks by experts from NGOs, and academic institutes, thematic posters by students and an awareness walk. Approximately, 60-70 delegates including those from academia, NGOs and Govt. ministries participated in the seminar. Academia and research students from the following institutions attended the symposium: Quaid- e-Azam University Islamabad, Fatima Jinnah Women University Islamabad, Islamic International University Islamabad, College of Medical Lab Technology National Institute of Health (NIH) Islamabad, Arid Agriculture University Rawalpindi and University of Agriculture Faisalabad.

The Chief guest of seminar was Dr. Muhammad Zaigham Abbas, Deputy Director Chemicals, from the Ministry of Climate Change (MoCC), Islamabad, who briefed about “Clean and Green Pakistan” initiative by the MoCC. Oral talks on; microplastics, governance mechanisms, issues and solutions were delivered by Dr. Muhammad Mumtaz from the University of São Paulo Brazil and Mr. Muhammad Ghanzfar from Wafer Baking Industry from Hattar industrial estate Haripur in the KP Province.  Posters were evaluated by the panel of experts and winners were awarded with cash prizes and certificates of appreciation. After poster competition, an awareness walk on the topic was organized within the premises of COMSATS University Islamabad and biodegradable bags donated by CLIMOSOL were distributed amongst students and faculty. Seminar ended with clear determinations by the participants to say “good bye” to plastic bags.
