Dr. Mobushir Riaz Khan, Assistant Prof. Department of Meteorology, Develops Method to Quantify Crop Production

Dr. Mobushir Riaz Khan, Assistant Professor Dept. of Meteorology, during Ph.D has developed a highly-accurate mapping method based on Remote Sensing (RS) and Geographical Information System (GIS) technologies which can show worldwide land use for the production of crops regularly. The method could provide quantities of crops and accurate estimates from space for the future planning of countries, regions and the world at large. Mobushir’s area of research was applied RS and GIS while the title of his thesis was Crops from Space: Improved earth observation capacity to map crop areas and to quantify production. Dr. Mobushir worked on food security and environmental sustainability (FSES). Mobushir did this work in collaboration with ITC Netherland and has earned his Ph.D degree. This research was partially funded by Higher Education Commission (HEC), Pakistan.

A survey has revealed that the vast majority of professionals who work with agricultural maps see added value in the new method and are interested in using it. Mobushir and other researchers at the ITC Faculty will further increase its accuracy and make it more suitable for a wider range of crop types.
