France to provide 90 Scholarships to Pakistani students including CIIT
Pakistan and France recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), concerning French scholarships for Pakistani students. The MoU was signed by Mr. Philippe Thiébaud, the ambassador of France to Pakistan and Dr. Javaid Laghari, Chairperson, Higher Education Commission (HEC), Pakistan. Vice Chancellors and representatives of the corresponding universities, institutions also attended the ceremony, held at French Embassy, Islamabad.
France, through its embassy in Islamabad, is offering scholarships to 90 promising students of six Pakistani universities. These scholarships will be offered in the fields of Social Sciences, Business and Architecture to the students of Quaid-e- Azam University, Islamabad, COMSATS Institute of Information Technology, Islamabad, Government College University, Lahore, Institute of Management Sciences, Peshawar, Institute of Business Management, Karachi, and Sardar Bahadur Khan Women University, Quetta.
The scholarships will cover the complete cost of education during the entire academic programme of the 90 recipients. The selection process will ensure that at least 25 percent of the scholarships go to the female candidates, especially coming from those areas where access to higher education is difficult.
Speaking on the occasion, the Ambassador termed higher education a key area in the bilateral relationship of both the countries. He said that this scholarship scheme would further strengthen the close friendship between the Governments of Pakistan and France. He also lauded the efforts of HEC for increasing higher education access in Pakistan.
Dr. Laghari said that HEC is committed to provide equitable access to higher education in Pakistan and a number of practical steps have been taken in this regard. He also extended thanks and appreciated the gesture of the Government and people of France.
“In Pakistan, less than eight percent of the 17-23 age groups are enrolled in any form of higher education. Needs-based scholarship[s programme is one answer to this challenge. This programme will enable young people, primarily from FATA, KPK and Balochistan to pursue their studies in top universities of Pakistan.”
