The Centre for Policy Studies held an important seminar on “Xenophobia: A Study of Impacts on Policy and International Relations" on Tuesday, 20 March 2018, from 2:30 to 5:00 pm at the Video Conference Hall of the Library, COMSATS Institute of Information Technology (CIIT), Islamabad. Xenophobia can be briefly described as the “fear and hatred of strangers or foreigners or of anything that is strange or foreign” and the rise in xenophobia has implications for both domestic policy (especially policy related to migration) and foreign policy.

The seminar provided a well balanced view of xenophobia and included presentations on the social psychological perspective, the international legal regime and refugees, the international views on migration, the US and xenophobia, and international relations and xenophobia. The seminar included well known practitioners from UN agencies and respected academics from Quaid-i-Azam University and CIIT. The seminar was conducted during exam week but still managed to attract many students. In fact, the hall proved to be small and many students had to sit on the carpets in the aisles.

Dr. Imran Syed, Head CPS, provided the Welcome Address and the seminar included a presentation by Dr. Noman Sattar of Quaid-i-Azam University on “ Reflecting on Xenophobia and Recent US Policies: Causes for Concern?”; a presentation by Ms. Inna Gladkova of UNHCR on “Applying the Comprehensive Refugee Response Framework for Predictable Responses for Refugees”; a presentation by Dr. Ayesha Inam of CIIT on “Understanding Xenophobia from a Social Psychological Perspective”; a presentation by Mr. M. Shehryar Ghazi on of IOM on “Contemporary International Views on Migration”; and a presentation by Dr. Imran Syed of CIIT on “Xenophobia and the International System”. In addition to students of CIIT, the seminar also attracted faculty members, including Dr. Muneeb Akhtar, Mr. Syed Muhammad Ali Zaidi, etc.
