About COMSATS

COMSATS Institute of Information Technology (CIIT) was established in 1998 with its first campus in Islamabad. It was granted the status of a degree awarding institute in 2001. CIIT offers graduate and undergraduate programs in a number of fields including Architecture, Computer Sciences, Humanities, Management Sciences, Development Studies, Physics, Bio Sciences, Chemistry, Engineering, Health Informatics, Mathematics, Meteorology, Environmental Sciences, Earth Sciences and Pharmacy. Currently, there are over 24,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students at CIIT. Over the last decade and a half, CIIT has established itself as a fast growing research institution with campuses in Lahore, Abbottabad, Wah, Attock, Sahiwal and Vehari and plans to establish more campuses across Pakistan and abroad. CIIT has about 2,200 faculty members of which 500 hold doctorate degrees in different fields. With its focus on research, CIIT runs a sizeable faculty development program that encourages young faculty members to pursue a PhD.

In 2012, the Higher Education Commission(HEC), Government of Pakistan ranked CIIT as 9th best for its quality and research ranking amongst all the degree awarding institutions of the country, and number one (1) among Computer Science and IT universities of the country. CIIT has strong linkages with many leading universities from around the world including University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) and North Dakota State University (NDSU) in the United States, Lancaster University (United Kingdom), Helsinki University of Technology (Finland), University of Bologna (Italy), Otago University (New Zealand), University of Western Sydney (Australia), Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (Germany), Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology (China) and University of Malaya (Malaysia) among others.

Over the years, different specialized Centers have been setup in the CIIT to support and aid research activities. The Business Incubation Centre (BIC), Centre for Advanced Studies in Telecommunication (CAST), Centre for Quantum Physics (CQP), Interdisciplinary Research Centre in Biomedical Materials (IRCBM), Centre for Professional Development (CPD), CISCO Regional Academy, Life Sciences Services Centre (LiSCENT),Center for Micro and Nano Devices (CMND), Engineering Resource Centre (ERC), COMSATS Community Development Unit (CCDU) and the newly formed Centre for Policy Studies (CPS) are currently engaged in a number of academic and research activities in their respective areas.
