Bachelor of Science in Data Science

Program Overview

Data scientists are responsible for taking facts, statistics, and numbers and turning them into valuable and understandable information for businesses to help influence the way a company is run or how they reach out to customers. Data scientists are needed in nearly every avenue of the industrialized world, from sports analytics and politics to social media. This degree program prepares students to work in a variety of fields, as data science is required throughout the world to help make the flow of knowledge and information easier to learn from, access, and use. Scholars take classes in computer and mathematical programming, data analysis, database systems, software engineering, digital communications, and artificial intelligence to help them build their skills and knowledge base so they can find a qualified career upon graduation.

The BS Data Science program essentially puts an emphasis on data science from a computing perspective. It has been designed to equip the students with cutting edge knowledge to foster the evolving need of computer technologies demanding smart and versatile use of data. In addition, the program helps the students’ progress on broad computer science principles. The degree is suitable for students interested in career industry and for the students who wish to pursue more specialized education. The program will help students to enhance their studies through variety of available innovative coursework. It is a four years program consisting of eight semesters. The maximum duration for completion of this degree is twelve semesters. The degree is awarded on completion of minimum 133 credit hours, including six credits for the project, with a passing CGPA of at least 2.0/4.0.

Mission Statement

BS Data Science has a dual emphasis on basic principles of statistics and computer science, with foundational training in statistical and mathematical aspects of data analysis. This program develops foundation on broad computer science principles, including algorithms, data structures, data management and machine learning. This program will prepare graduates for a career in data analysis, combining foundational statistical concepts with computational principles from computer science.

The Data Science major prepares you to impact industries, government, health care, and academia. You'll be in high demand with your expertise to find meaningful data and drive positive business decisions.

Program Educational Objectives

This program develops foundation on broad computer science principles, including algorithms, data structures, data management and machine learning. This program will prepare graduates for a career in data analysis, combining foundational statistical concepts with computational principles from computer science.

  1. Academic Education: Completion of an accredited program of study designed to prepare graduates as computing professionals.
  2. Knowledge for Solving Computing Problems: Apply knowledge of computing fundamentals, computing specialization, mathematics & statistics, basic and social sciences, and domain knowledge appropriate for the computing specialization to the abstraction and conceptualization of computing models.
  3. Problem Analysis: Identify, formulate, research literature, and solve complex computing problems reaching substantiated conclusions using fundamental and advanced principles of computer sciences, data science, mathematics & statistics, basic and social sciences.
  4. Design/ Development of Solutions: Design and evaluate solutions for complex computing problems, and design and evaluate data science applications, components, or processes that meet specified needs with appropriate consideration for public health and safety, cultural, societal, and environmental considerations.
  5. Modern Tool Usage: Create, select, adapt and apply appropriate computing and data science based techniques, resources, and tools to complex computing activities, with an understanding of the limitations.
  6. Individual and Team Work: Function effectively as an individual and as a member or leader in diverse teams and in multi-disciplinary settings.
  7. Communication: Communicate effectively with the computing community and with society at large about complex computing activities by being able to comprehend and write effective reports, design documentation, make effective presentations, and give and understand clear instructions.
  8. Computing Professionalism and Society: Understand and assess societal, health, safety, legal, and cultural issues within local and global contexts, and the consequential responsibilities relevant to professional computing practices.
  9. Ethics: Understand and commit to professional ethics, responsibilities, and norms of professional computing practices.
  10. Life-long Learning: Recognize the need, and have the ability, to engage in independent learning for continual development as a computing professional.

Career Outcomes

The Bachelor of Science in Data Science is a broad-based course that provides you knowledge of how to apply analytic techniques and algorithms (including statistical and data mining approaches) to large data sets to extract meaningful insights. This program, in addition, develops foundation on broad computer science principles, including algorithms, data structures, data management and machine learning. Global demand for combined statistical and computing expertise outstrips supply, with evidence-based predictions of a major shortage in this area for at least the next 15 years. For graduates of Data Science, this shortage presents opportunities to forge careers in a large number of areas involving quantitative data analysis and computational skills. These include commerce (e-commerce), finance, government, genomics and other areas of “big science", entertainment and sport, education and academic research. Career opportunities include business intelligence analyst, data mining engineer, data architect and data scientist. Graduates will also be highly adaptable to new data-related challenges as they arise, perhaps in hitherto unforeseen fields.

Eligibility

Students are eligible for admission if they have Intermediate or equivalent (‘A’ Level) with minimum 50% marks from accredited institution and *NTS-NAT test score with minimum 50% marks.
