BS Physics

Program Overview

The Bachelor in Physics Program (BPH) provides an excellent basis for undergrad study in physics. Within this program, you study a variety of subjects: Fundamentals of Physics, Quantum Mechanics, Advanced Mathematics, Opto-electronics, Materials Science, High Energy Physics, Astrophysics, Cosmology, Bio-physics, Environmental Sciences, Semiconductors, Nuclear Physics, etc. Interdisciplinary topics are also offered in our program as an elective course option.

Our emphasis on problem solving skills with prime focus on fundamental concepts, are a distinguishably remarkable highlight of our program. We have undergraduate labs where students learn/understand the practical aspects of the theoretical subjects taught in lectures. Additionally there are many opportunities for our undergrad students in the Department of Physics to participate in research activities. This gives them a better learning atmosphere as well as hands on experience by directly engaging in research. Therefore, our program addresses both the theoretical and research aspects very competently and efficiently. This enables our students to have a bright future in the field of their choice.

This program (BPH) is very much versatile and designed extensively to develop a strong background for understanding in the fundamentals of physics.

You Should Know:

  • A semester means 15-18 weeks teaching, excluding examinations. There are two regular semesters per academic year at CUI.
  • One credit hour means at least one hour teaching per week throughout the semester.
  • A full time student means a student who has registered at least 12 credit courses in the semester.
  • Grade Point Average (GPA) is the weighted average of the grades earned in the courses during a semester.
  • Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) is the weighted average of the grades earned in the courses during a program.
  • Discipline in the campus has to be maintained. Any act of indiscipline is liable to punishment to the degree of severity of the act.
  • A student is placed on PROBATION if his/her CGPA is less than 2.0
  • If a student earns two consecutive probations, he/she CEASES to be a student of the Institute.
  • A student can DROP (although not desirable) a registered course, within the specified time, but he/she will not have to pay its course fee when it is re-taken. The last date for drop of course is mentioned in the semester schedule.
  • A student can WITHDRAW a course before the second Sessional but will have to pay the fee when it is retaken. The last date for withdrawal of courses is also mentioned in the semester schedule.

Final Year Projects:

In BPH program, students have to take research for one year so as to get a chance to learn the techniques and methods used in current research topics. They have a number of options depending on their interest for research with one of the following research groups:

  • Applied Thermal Physics Lab (ATPL),
  • Magnetic Materials Research Lab (MMRL),
  • Center for Micro and Nano Devices (CMND),
  • Nano-Sensors Catalysis Lab (NSCL)
  • Radiation Physics Lab (RPL),
  • Laser Lab,
  • Plasma Lab,
  • Materials labs etc.

All groups have state of the art equipment in their labs, relevant to their fields with an excellent learning and working environment. Students can also carry on theoretical research in Atomic, Plasma, Laser, Condensed Matter Physics and High Energy Physics under the supervision of competent faculty members.

Qualified faculty (over 75 number of PhD’s) having degrees from national and international universities in diverse fields of Physics are committed to enhance quality of teaching, research and practice in BS Physics program.

Batch Counselors:

Students are also facilitated to consult their respective batch counselors during the semester to discuss issues related to courses and studies.

Career Options:

Learning Physics at an undergraduate level leads to a number of exciting career opportunities.  With a major in Physics at undergrad level, you can enjoy academic environment in school/college. You can have an option of job with some research institutions in Pakistan or abroad.

Completing this degree, you will find yourself better equipped to apply for graduate and doctorate programs anywhere in the world and continue learning/participating in forefronts of technology and research. Physicists are key members in many technical companies/industries/research institutes which are interested in applying cutting edge research to their equipment, tools and products. As the interdisciplinary applications of physics is growing day by day (like in bio-physics, engineering physics, physical chemistry, medicine etc), We designed our program in such a way that it also gives an opportunity to interact with different fields, with the option for elective courses. Thus, you can also have career opportunities in other fields.

These potential future prospects make BPH program as one of the promising choices for students who want to keep their options open.
